Freshen Up Your Garage Door
Here are a few suggestions to greatly improve the look of the garage door you already have. These might also save you money because the garage door that is currently an eyesore can be easily and inexpensively brightened up, so you don’t have to replace it or live with a door that is unsightly.
1. Clean your metal, sectional garage door! Take a sponge, rag, hose and bucket of hot water and wash that thing down! It’s a great 20-minute project and the garage door that people see first when they see your house is back to its highest level of loveliness.
2. If the window frame and inserts are yellow and discolored from the rest of the door: Buy a can of spray paint, mask them off and paint them! The yellow color is due to a lack of UV protection in the plastic. Those decorative inserts pop out (be careful, older inserts could be brittle and fragile). So, take them out, clean the windows, paint the frames and inserts and put them back in. Your door will look just right!
3. If your house color and your door color aren’t a match anymore, paint the garage door. All garage door manufacturers have painting instructions. I do not recommend painting dark colors on south or west facing exposures. It’s too hot and the paint won’t last, so stick with lighter colors. An inexpensive garage door painted to match the house upgrades the look of both. When your door looks weary and drab, a coat of paint might do the trick!
These things are so easy to do and are such rewarding projects. Take care of the largest moving object in your home. Often, the garage door is the first introduction people have to your home. Make it a great first impression!
