Lions, Tigers and Bears, Oh My!

“Mommy, I want to be Iron Man for Halloween!” says my four-year-old son as he spies the Halloween costumes in August in the stores! So, I buy the costume – $25. Now it’s September and we’re rolling through another store and my son sees a Transformer costume. The Iron Man costume has sat untouched for a month but now he’s all about Transformers, so I go ahead and buy the Transformer costume – $25. Now it’s October, he and his pre-school friends are talking about what they want to be for Halloween. My son is changing his mind on a daily basis. I’m thinking, not another $25 costume! I could feed the three surrounding neighborhoods in Halloween candy for all the money I’m spending on costumes.
How many times has this happened to you? If it’s not costumes, it’s clothes. My older son keeps going through phases; ripped jeans, no ripped jeans; sweat pants, no sweat pants. Camouflage shorts, definitely no camouflage shorts. It seems the minute I have finally bought enough __________ (fill in the blank for the correct trend of the day), he’s refusing to wear that out-dated “last week’s” fashion choice.
I can’t even imagine what that would be like in a household of girls (although one of us certainly can!) I’m shuddering to think how my wallet would be shrinking on a daily basis. And all those hair bows, accessories, purses, and shoes, etc!
So, the frugal momma in me has learned her lesson. I can afford everything my kids desire by regularly stocking up at seasonal kids’ consignment sales. It’s not nearly so painful to buy three costumes for an indecisive pre-schooler when I can get all three costumes for $25! My dress-up bin is now full of options.
I can afford all the trends when I can spend two to five dollars apiece instead of $25 each! Now he can have jeans, sweat pants and cammo shorts! And the best part… when I’m done with them, I’ll consign them and earn some money back!
So, the absolute best advice I could give any parent out there: shop seasonal consignment sales! They are a great way to save money and earn money.
