The Love of Italian Food!
Americans love Italian food and so they should. The history of Italy and the cuisine reputation was established more than 2,000 years ago. From the Roman Empire movement onward, culturally food preparation was very important and the spread of Italian food began its long march and has evolved through the years! The culinary history of Italy has cross-cultural currents of the people and the societies from over thousands of years that have defined Italian cuisine.
From pasta to pizza to antipasti these popular dishes associated with Italian food have become a mainstay in American cuisine. The many unique cooking techniques have come into our existence mixing new ideas with old and thus making Italian dishes with the freshest ingredients available. Italian food is characterized by simplicity and the quality of the ingredients. Cheese and wine are a major part of the cuisine with of course, many variations.
The common ingredients in Italian cuisine vary from fruits, vegetables, sauces, and meats. Different regions of Italy may have used more fish, sausage, pork and different types of cheeses. For instance, in Northern Italy you will find many kinds of stuffed pasta, polenta and risotto. In the traditional central part of Italy, the cuisine uses ingredients that feature tomatoes, all kinds of meats, fish and pecorino cheese. In the region of Tuscany pasta, and especially pappardelle is served with meat sauce. Southern Italy you are more inclined to see the use of tomatoes, fresh and cooked in their tomato sauce. Peppers, olives, olive oil, garlic, artichokes, capers, ricotta cheese, eggplants, zucchini and anchovies, sardines and tuna are important ingredients to this local cuisine.
We know American kids and adults are crazy for Italian food and pasta and let’s not forget pizza! The added bonus to eating many of these foods is that it can protect us from heart disease. A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, nuts, beans, legumes, fish, olive oil, whole grains, with small amounts of meats and cheese are all part of the Mediterranean diet. We all have a love affair with Italian food and will carry on our love affair of this delicious food.
