Bad Experience?
Bad experiences in front of any size crowd feels very uncomfortable- no matter how old you might be! Below are some tips to help you bounce back whether you are singing, playing an instrument, dancing, or even speaking.
Tip: So You Made a Mistake
It’s embarrassing to make a mistake, but it’s not the end of the world. When you are singing, hitting the wrong note or forgetting the words sometimes happens. Just ignore it and find your place quickly – don’t stop or show it in your face or body.
How many notes are in “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star?” – 40 or 50? In school, if you miss a couple of notes on a test, you might still get an A. Why do we get so upset when we miss a note? This is where I tell my students I am the only teacher that will tell you it’s okay to cheat. Of course that’s not okay in regular school, but in singing if you forget a note or some words, move past it and go on – just like it didn’t happen.
Tip: Brush It Off
Brush it off- it’s normal! Nobody is perfect. Take your experience and use it to improve future performances. If you forgot a word or note, study your music before the next show or come up with a game that helps you remember what you missed. But don’t let your mistake overwhelm you. It’s like Rafiki said to Simba in The Lion King – “It does not matter. It is in the past.”
Tip: Turn Negative into Positive
There’s a critic in every crowd and sometimes they’ll make a comment that hurts your feelings. It might be someone you know from school who says “you can’t sing” or someone who you overhear say “that wasn’t very good.” Remember that someone might be jealous that you’re on stage and they’re not, or that you’re more popular than they are. They may wish that they could sing as well as you and don’t know how to tell you that they really liked your performance. And if you overhear someone being critical, make sure you know who or what they’re talking about. It might not have anything to do with you at all.
It’s good to review your performance, remembering what you did right and fixing anything that you might like to do better. Keep in mind that the majority of all the notes you’ll sing will be right and most audiences will leave happy and entertained!
Tip: Talk to Your Teacher About Any Negative Experiences
Talk about your experience and anything you are struggling with with your instructor. They are in the best position to help you work through any difficult spots.
Why not work to build these tools in your or your children’s lives? The success of education depends upon cooperation between teacher, student, and parent. VIBE Performing Arts endeavors to help all students experience excitement and dedication necessary to help them succeed in life as well as on stage.
