News from The American Cancer Society October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Pink is a color closely associated with breast cancer awareness and October, which is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. In its round-the-clock efforts to save lives through sharing vital cancer information and raise funds to support cancer research and programs, the American Cancer Society encourages readers to acquaint themselves with the following breast cancer information and “stay in the pink” through knowledge and self-health advocacy.
An empowering way to do this – simply go online to: www.cancer.org/cancer/breast-cancer.html
There you will be instantly plugged into a wealth of reading which includes:
Basic information on breast cancer including how it forms, signs and symptoms;
Breast cancer risks and prevention;
Early detection and diagnosis;
Understanding a breast cancer diagnosis and treatment options;
Breast reconstruction surgery;
Non-cancerous breast conditions;
Living as a breast cancer survivor;
Helpful videos and information on breast cancer research, news, and stories of hope;
Hair loss and mastectomy products.
You will also learn about “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer” and its community-held October walking events which celebrate and honor breast cancer survivors (currently 3.5 million in the U.S.!) and caregivers; educate the public about prevention and detection to reduce risk of the disease; and raise funds to help end breast cancer through innovative research. At Making Strides, participants walk as individuals or on teams with family, friends, and coworkers. Event volunteers assist with registration, logistics, and participant support. The more money raised, the larger the impact the ACS can make on cancer. FYI: The American Cancer Society has played a critical role in developing breast cancer breakthroughs including funding the lifesaving/extending drugs Tamoxifen and Herceptin. Money raised this year through Strides could go towards developing another new generation of improved treatments – which means you could be a part of the next big breast cancer breakthrough.
The American Cancer Society also offers an abundant source of breast cancer information videos on its YouTube channel. Find them at https://m.youtube.com/user/AmerCancerSociety
The American Cancer Society is the nationwide, community-based, voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer, through research, education, advocacy, and service. Thanks in part to its contributions to cancer research, treatment, and education, more than 1.5 million lives have been saved in the U.S. over the past two decades.
