Oakmont of Santa Clarita Joins the Walk to End Alzheimer’s
Held by the Alzheimer’s Association, The Walk to End Alzheimer’s is the world’s largest event to raise awareness and resources for Alzheimer’s care and support. In the United States, more than five million people are afflicted with Alzheimer’s disease. Because of this, Walks are held annually in over 600 cities and communities nationwide; people of all ages and abilities are welcome to participate in the Walk and many groups and organizations create teams as a way to spread awareness of the nation’s sixth most leading cause of death.
In addition to the Walk, each registered walker has the opportunity to participate in the Promise Garden Ceremony, a hands-on, mission-focused activity that allows participants to raise flowers representing their promise to remember, honor, care and fight for those living with Alzheimer’s disease and their caregivers. The flowers, which can be personalized with hand-written messages, highlight the diverse reasons for Walk participation and collectively create a dynamic, colorful and meaningful garden. Participants are encouraged to take the flowers home as remembrance of their Walk experience and the promise made. Each flower has its own significance depending on which color is used:
• Blue – I have Alzheimer’s disease
• Yellow – I am supporting or caring for someone with Alzheimer’s
• Purple – I have lost someone to Alzheimer’s
• Orange – I support the cause and the Alzheimer’s Association’s vision of a world without Alzheimer’s
