Kindergarten at SCCS
The Kindergarten program at SCCS fully prepares children to enter into the first grade by providing a low student-to-teacher ratio and rigorous academics taught from a Christian worldview.
“Kindergarten is the foundation for all future education and future success in every aspect of life,” said SCCS Administrator Mr. Huckabone. “It’s important to get it right.”
Reading and writing are important first steps at SCCS. Kindergarteners are taught the alphabet, learning the names of the letters, the sounds they make (phonics) and how to write them. By December students are reading simple stories in chapter books.
“Our phonics program is excellent,” said SCCS Kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Steinbock. “It gives the kids confidence in their reading. Students also enjoy meeting weekly with their third grade buddy to practice reading.”
SCCS parent, Jason Cooper, credits SCCS’s kindergarten program and low student-to-teacher ratio for his son Jackson excelling in the subject of reading. “Jackson began reading much bigger words compared to many of his non-SCCS friends,” said Jason. “There is a lot of one-on-one attention at SCCS.”
Math is another “graded” subject. Kindergarteners are taught simple concepts first, like “same/different” and “alone/between/ next to.” They’re taught to recognize two and three-dimensional shapes, and patterns. They learn to count by marking off days on a calendar, eagerly anticipating the “100-Day Party.” By graduation, they can perform simple calculations like adding and “take away” of single digits.
In science, children learn about the earth and sky, plants and animals and recycling. In social studies they learn about community helpers and the countries of the world.
SCCS Kindergarteners attend weekly chapel and also memorize a Bible verse each week. Additionally, all kindergarteners have the opportunity to compete against other SCV private schools through SCCS’s Pee Wee athletics programs which includes: soccer, basketball, flag football, and cheer; as well as enroll in the available after school enrichment classes.
Technology rich classrooms, enriching field trips with parents, P.E. classes, library time, music classes, computer instruction and hands on experiments all add to SCCS’ comprehensive Kindergarten program.
For over 35 years, SCCS has partnered with families to help produce students who are prepared to make a difference in the world for God. Each year SCCS students are accepted into the nation’s top universities.
