The Value of a Supporter
Such is the case for a man who had two friends, Nick & Joe. They did not speak frequently nor have a public friendship; in fact, Nick met his friend at night so no one would see them talking to one another. Joe admired him, but privately, because he did not want to risk damaging his status in the community or his business by being seen with an individual that was not part of his religious, social or political peers. But when you need someone at a critical time, it is important to have friends, even if they are private friends, like Nick & Joe.
Why? Because when you find yourself in a precarious situation, and need someone to care for you, you discover who truly “has your back” and who will disown you. The man referenced was Jesus Christ, and the two friends were Nicodemus and Joseph of Arimathea. The central tenant of the Christian faith is that Jesus Christ rose from the dead on the third day. Who made that possible? Nicodemus and Joseph. Why? Because scripture says in John 19 they asked for the body of Jesus, bound it in linen strips with spices in accordance with Jewish custom, and laid the body in the tomb. That simple act of dedication paved the way for Mary and the disciples to discover the evidence of the empty tomb on that Resurrection Day.
It was a small gesture, but it had enormous significance. What small thing are you doing that is making a big difference in someone’s life? As we celebrate the resurrection, remember what Nick & Joe did, and ask yourself what you can do for Jesus.
