Dentinal Hypersensitivity
Most often than not, patient’s chief complaint is sensitivity. It is a common dental problem that is often under reported or misdiagnosed by dental professionals. Dentinal hypersensitivity is a global oral health issue and is a challenge because it is difficult to describe to dental professionals. A lot of patients think that is normal. It is very difficult to accurately diagnose because there are a lot of other dental diseases
that have to be ruled out first like dental caries, cracked tooth syndrome, poor diet, and faulty restorations. The most common complaint of patients is a sharp transient pain. Dentinal hypersensitivity is more common in people aged between 20 to 30 years old and then rise again when in their 50s. Factors that contribute to this condition are periodontal disease, recession, diet, gingival inflammation, oral care habits, emotional and environmental state.
What can be done to alleviate the pain? One solution is to apply fluoride varnish. Fluoride varnish is normally used to prevent tooth decay making the enamel impenetrable. Calcium fluoride is the main ingredient of the varnish. It is applied after a thorough cleaning of the teeth. It forms a sticky layer covering the teeth surfaces which easily becomes hard as soon as it comes in contact with the saliva.
Not only does it help with the sensitivity, it also slows down or stops decay from progressing. Over all applying the fluoride varnish helps seal the exposed dentin, thus eliminating pain and offers a great comfort to patients who have been suffering from it. So next time you visit your dental office, don’t hesitate to ask if this may help you.
