Why a Cat Doctor Needs Her Own Cats
After seeing cats all day, you might think I have had enough of cats. After all I’ve stroked and palpated and listened to at least 20 cat hearts on an average day. I’ve used my trusty lint rollers over and over in a futile effort to keep from becoming a person wearing an angora suit. I’ve been head butted and hissed at and maybe swiped a time or two. Mostly, I’m tolerated by my kitty patients, and I consider that a victory, since I’m doing my best to diagnose and treat them.
So, when I come home each day, oftentimes rather late, my cats make it clear that they are happy to see me and I am reminded of the many pleasures of sharing my home with cats. Mimi greets me with multiple chirps and squeaks, Henry jumps on my lap for a minute or two, followed by my Tonkinese rescue Billy who settles into my lap for the rest of the evening. It’s a wonder I can hear my husband or the television over his very loud purring. As I stroke Billy’s mink soft fur, I feel the stresses of the day melt away. If I feel a little energetic, out comes the teaser wand so everyone can get a workout.
We Cat Doctors also experience the sadness that comes with sharing our lives with cats. In the last year, my family has lost three beloved cats, to cancer, heart disease and advanced kidney disease. I know how loss feels and that knowledge helps me to help my clients during times of difficult decisions and even harder loss. Fortunately, the many years of happy companionship tend to outweigh the pangs of loss in the long run. And while we greatly miss Dumbledore, Willy and Jake, we are truly enjoying getting to know Mimi, Henry and Billy. Long may they rule our home.
