Healthy Vents and Healthy Insulation
Your air vents allow outside air to enter your home. Dust, dirt, and smoke particles can enter through your roof, attic, gable vents, and soffit vents. Most homes, (95 percent) have the one-quarter inch vent screen grids. These vent screens are cheap and thin. They are very susceptible to rodent intrusion, and they allow large fire embers to enter your attic areas. All contaminants that enter these areas will usually collect in and on your insulation. The air that you breathe gets filtered through your insulation, and that’s where the health risk starts.
While screen vents are a vital design function for the structural integrity and the health of your home. They can also create a danger to your family during wildfire season. During high wind conditions accompanied by wildfires, flying embers can enter your attic and crawl spaces. Once they enter your attic, your home can burn from the inside out. There is a solution, and we have it. Our vent screens are approved by the California State Fire Marshal (Cal Fire) and the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety (IBHS)
If your home is older than five years, or older than two years in brush fire areas, you should have your attic inspected for contaminants, and if you have contaminated insulation (usually from rodent droppings and urine), then it should be removed. The contaminated area should be disinfected and sanitized. Vents should also be upgraded with the latest high strength and tight grid vent screens (HPR-Vents). When a wildfire hits your area, these fire safety vents can save your home. They can also go a long way in keeping rodents out as well as medium size dirt and dust containments. If you or anyone in your family suffers from allergies, or asthma, you may want to consider the new Owens Corning “Pure Safety High Performance” wall, attic, and crawl space insulation. These new insulation products are approved by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA). Don’t hesitate; have your attic inspected today.
