Message from the City Manager Ken Striplin

“The business prospects of our pleasantly situated little town were never better than at present. Newhall is destined at no distant day to be an important business center. The developments in the oil country continue very favorable, and lumber and machinery are being received here daily.” – Los Angeles Times, September 23, 1882
Old Town Newhall has been through many ups and downs since its humble beginnings. Today I am happy to say that once again “the prospects of our pleasantly situated little town were never better than at present.” The revitalization of the area, which is now known as the premier arts and entertainment district in our City, is well underway.
Take a walk down Main Street and you will notice the flurry of activity on the redevelopment block right across the street from the Old Town Newhall Library. One of the biggest changes is that our brand-new City-owned parking structure is now open, giving you 372 free parking spaces to choose from. With a new structure also comes a new look. Make sure you take in the “word cloud” signage on the first floor that highlights all there is to do in the area – from seeing real bison at Hart Park to laughing out loud at live comedy nights at The MAIN.
Right next door to our new parking structure will soon be the highly-anticipated Laemmle Theatre and Newhall Crossings development. The Laemmle Theatre will offer our community a quality independent, foreign and art house cinema right here in Santa Clarita. This family-owned business will offer seven screens, 500 seats and a variety of films to Old Town Newhall. Newhall Crossings will let you eat, shop and even live right in the heart of Old Town Newhall. This mixed-use development will feature over 20,000 square feet of retail space, a public plaza and 47 residential units. Both projects are slated to open in summer of 2019.
As you make your way further into Old Town Newhall, you can step back in time as you read the famous names on our Walk of Western Stars. You will also find many new spots to eat, sip and shop nestled among your long-time favorites. From classic comfort food, to BBQ, to farm–to-table delights – there is something for everyone, no matter the craving. Also, make sure to leave time to try out the many tasting rooms that are popping up in the area. There are several spots to enjoy wine tastings and food pairings – as well as craft beers.
Old Town Newhall has plenty of culture to experience with art exhibits and live performances of every type, from dance and music, to theatre and comedy. Make sure you check out what is taking to the stage at The MAIN, Canyon Theatre Guild and the newly renovated Newhall Family Theater for the Performing Arts. Of course Thursday nights in Newhall have long been the can’t-miss events of the summer – and year round! Make sure you visit ThursdaysatNewhall.com for a full schedule of all the fun including SENSES block parties, Jam Sessions, 10 by 10 and so much more!
If you are wondering what is going up across the street from the Newhall Ice Company on Fifth Street, it is the first hotel to be built in the area in many years. The Luxen Hotel will have 42 rooms for guests to come experience the area.
Another new addition that makes getting to the area even easier is the Santa Clarita Summer Trolley. Thursday through Sunday nights you can catch a ride on our Santa Clarita Transit Trolley from Westfield Town Center or other stops in the City and get dropped off in Old Town Newhall to enjoy all the entertainment and nightlife.
I encourage you to come experience all the new offerings, which blend perfectly with the old, rustic charm of our premier arts and entertainment district. Grab your friends and family and we will see you in Old Town Newhall.
