Readers of All Ages Invited to Participate in the Annual Summer Reading Program Online Registration Now Open!
The Santa Clarita Public Library’s annual Summer Reading Program is set to return June 11 through July 28, 2018. This year’s theme is “Reading Takes You Everywhere” and focuses on worldly topics such as travel, art and cultures from around the world. The program encourages children, teens and adults to read during the summer through reading missions, prizes and free events. Registration is now open and is free with a Santa Clarita Public Library card. Participants may register at any time before the program ends at SCVSummerReading.com.
According to national research conducted by Dominican University, young people experience learning loss when they don’t engage in educational activities during the summer. Research spanning 100 years shows that students typically score lower on standardized tests at the end of summer vacation than they do on the same tests at the beginning of the summer. To prevent what is known as the “summer slide,” parents are encouraged to enroll their children in the Summer Reading Program.
The Summer Reading Program includes reading missions tracked online such as the “Five Book Summer Reading Challenge.” Magazines, audiobooks and eBooks all count towards the goal of completing five books. Once completed and logged on the website, participants can earn digital badges and fun prizes.
Exciting free activities for all ages inspired by this year’s “Reading Takes You Everywhere” theme will also be taking place at each of the Santa Clarita Public Library branches and at various locations throughout the City of Santa Clarita. The young and young-at-heart are invited to join in on activities and workshops including a Vincent Van Gogh-inspired chalk pastel class, travel-themed movie nights, craft classes and more.
The Summer Reading Program is offered by the Santa Clarita Public Library and is sponsored by the Friends of the Santa Clarita Public Library. The Friends of Santa Clarita Public Library is a dedicated group of Santa Clarita residents who volunteer, advocate and fundraise to meet the needs of Santa Clarita Public Libraries and patrons. Proceeds from fundraisers sponsored by the Friends of the Library help make possible the dynamic public programming that makes our community a better place.
