Being a community coffee house means three things: First, being a small business that contributes directly to the local economy. Second, bringing value to the community of which you are a part. Third, creating an environment where you don’t feel rushed and you feel welcomed to hang out.
Being a small business contributes directly to the local economy. When money is spent at a local small business, a major portion of that money stays in the local economy. Instead of the money you spend being sent off to share-holders outside of your town, the money goes to the team members and business owners who spend it locally. This is a very important part of a healthy community. When you shop, eat, and drink in Old Town Newhall, you are keeping the local economy strong.
Being a community coffee house also means bringing value to your community. This can be accomplished by donating coffee, money, and scholarships to the local schools. The surrounding schools support your coffee house and your coffee house should support the local schools. This reciprocity fosters a healthy community.
Lastly, you should create an environment where the community can gather. When your focus as a coffee house is on the community, you won’t rush your customers out the door. They will feel welcomed to hang out for a while, have a meeting, play a game, or write a term paper. This is a crucial aspect of being a truly community coffee house.
