Bark For Life and a Breast Cancer-Free World
October has been designated by the American Cancer Society as Breast Cancer Awareness month. Except for skin cancer, breast cancer is the most commonly occurring cancer in women. According to ACS research, the average risk of a woman in the United States developing breast cancer sometime in her life is about 12 percent. One of the ways that ACS recommends to lower the risk of being diagnosed is being physically active. This month the Santa Clarita unit of American Cancer Society presents a perfect opportunity to get out and walk with your dog at its annual fundraiser Bark For Life. The event will be held on Saturday October 27 from 8 a.m. to noon. This year’s theme is Halloween Extravaganza, so dress up your doggie and show your holiday spirit. The event will be held at West Creek Park, 24247 Village Circle, Valencia. Admission is free, but guests can register their dogs for $15 ($25 for two dogs) and the registration fee includes a goody bag and doggie bandanna.
Bark For Life guests enjoying friends and canine companionship
Bark For Life is a nationwide event for ACS. It is the fall kick-off event for the spring Relay For Life fundraiser. Dogs are not allowed at Relay because cancer patients whose immune systems are compromised due to chemotherapy risk infections or allergies. So, this event honors the healing role that dogs serve as companions who relieve stress and elevate mood. Last year Bark For Life raised $7,500. All funds raised each year support research, services, and education provided by ACS. The carnival-style day will be filled with food, music, vendor booths, raffles, and a dog agility course demonstration. There will be a photo booth, doggie games, and a doggie costume contest. Come celebrate canine companionship, honor breast cancer survivors, and support the American Cancer Society! To register online, go to www.SCVBark.org. For more information email info@scvbark.org.
