Hearing Loss and Healthy Aging
Hearing loss is one of the most common conditions affecting older adults, one in three people older than 60 and two-thirds of Americans seventy and older have hearing loss.
This condition is often ignored and underreported even though it has been proven to detrimentally impact relationship, mood, and physical health.
Despite the overwhelming statistics of adults with hearing loss, a very small number are getting the help they need. Many seniors are unaware of the serious health risk that can occur when hearing loss goes untreated or that improving hearing loss has been shown to elevate quality of life. Seniors who take hearing fitness seriously by investing in health care and specifically getting hearing aids, have better communication, are happier, and are less likely to suffer from Alzheimer and dementia.
Hearing problems can be addressed in three basic ways: nutrition—vitamins B12 and folic acid help maintain hearing health, avoidance—limiting exposure to loud noises or music, and health care—seeing an audiologist to have hearing evaluated and treated. Untreated hearing loss can cause physical and mental deterioration and can even be dangerous. There are many sound cues in our environment that warn of impending danger.
