What is Xerostomia?
Xerostomia, more commonly known as dry mouth is caused by inadequate function of the salivary glands. Most people suffer from dry mouth and think it is normal.
We all get dry mouth sometimes-when we are upset, under stress, or frightened. Dry mouth is most commonly found in older adults.
The main reason is because older adults take more medications that causes xerostomia. Cancer treatment can result in less saliva production many other prescriptions and even over the counter medication can contribute to dry mouth. Antihistamines, decongestants, high blood pressure medications, muscle relaxants, urinary incontinence drugs, Parkinson’s disease and anti-depressants are some of the medications that can affect saliva production.
Having dry mouth can be annoying at times. Because of less production of saliva, people are more prone to tooth decay.
There are things that can help to alleviate dry mouth. People should avoid chewing or smoking tobacco, sugary foods or drinks, acidic foods or drinks, spicy foods, astringents, and alcohol and caffeine consumption should be kept to a minimum. People diagnosed with dry mouth should pay special attention to their oral/dental hygiene. This includes plaque removal and treatment of gingival infections, inflammation and dental caries. Brushing teeth and flossing regularly is very important. A regular visit with your dental professional is key to detect any dental problems immediately.
