Oral Health and Pregnancy
Finding out that you are pregnant is such an indescribable feeling. You are filled with joy, happiness and excitement. There is so much to think about after getting the good news. Sharing the news with family and friends, scheduling prenatal appointments, guessing the sex of the baby, coming up with a name among other things. This is an exciting time in your life. Keeping your teeth and gums healthy should be high on your priority list now more than ever.
You will be experiencing a lot of hormonal changes during the entire pregnancy, thus affecting how your body reacts to plaque that builds up on your teeth which can cause redness, swelling, tenderness and bleeding gums. This is more commonly known as pregnancy gingivitis. Gingivitis is caused by hormonal changes causing an increased blood flow to the gum tissue. Pregnancy gingivitis develops between two and eight months. It may reach a peak during the third trimester. Pregnant women may face an increased risks of tooth decay and loose teeth. Gingivitis, if left untreated can cause complications in your mouth and even for your pregnancy. It can lead to Periodontitis. Periodontitis is a more advanced stage of gum disease that can spread down to the bone. This may result in putting the baby at risk of pre-term birth or low birth weight. There are ways of reducing discomfort and damage when experiencing this changes.
One of them is choosing a soft bristles toothbrush, tooth paste with fluoride because fluoride help provide an extra barrier of protection from the plaque and acids. Morning sickness with vomiting can increase the risk for enamel erosion. Make sure to rinse mouth after vomiting to wash away the acids that can damage the tooth structure. Avoid excessive sugar intake. Find times in your day to brush, floss and rinse when you are at your best. Increased frequency of flossing as it helps catch any trapped food particles and bacteria.
Eat a healthy diet. Try to eat a variety of fruits vegetables, whole grains and dairy products. Drink plenty of water. Most importantly, visit your dental hygienist and dentist more frequently. More than ever, practice good oral hygiene.
