Holiday Season in a Diverse Preschool
When we think about the Holiday Season many things come to mind. For some it might be family and friends being together, presents and yummy foods to eat. Most families have their own traditions, so how can the holidays be celebrated in the diverse preschool setting?
Because all children are unique it is important to allow them to have self-expression. They should be given the opportunity to share their family traditions with their classmates. The children will then realize that they have both similarities and differences but can all still work together in a community setting.
Allowing the children to help those in need is a wonderful way to express holiday spirit. Schools should participate in a food drive, donating toys for less fortunate children, this will allow the children to realize how very fortunate they are. Curriculum can be based on the deed being done. For example, counting and building with cans that are brought in for can drive, or painting a picture of the toy the child has donated. A creative curriculum can make the Holiday Season extra special and meaningful. Children should make gifts for their family to show their love and appreciation.
When the Holiday Season ends hopefully all that has been taught and learned will continue on throughout the year. Allowing children to know the wonderful feeling of family, friends, love, giving and laughter.
