Alzheimer’s Prevention
Many know of my heartwrenching Alzheimer’s journey with my family, and my steadfast goal to prevent the same fate for myself. After much reading and consulting experts, I am summarizing my top “take-aways”. Disclaimer: this is not medical advice, and I do not hold myself out to be a medical provider. Rather, this is a summary of my top suggestions:
1. Get tested for the Apoe4 gene. Go to www.23andme.com, and learn if you have this gene (single or double). Then go to Apoe4.info, and you will be amazed at the active on-line community and preventative information available.
2. Studies show that food definitely harms or nourishes your brain. There is a “gut-brain” connection. Studies show that a Ketogenic diet protects and improves brain function, and has other definite benefits. This means no sugar, low carbs, good proteins (grass fed beef), and organic produce.
3. Consume brain healthy fats regularly. Olive oil, coconut oil, MCT Oil, etc. I blend MCT Oil and Ghee in my coffee every morning.
4. Supplements. Depending upon your genetic status, and your bloodwork results, get your supplements designed for your needs. Your brain health is priceless, and a generic multi-vitamin is not enough.
5. Read the newest research on the subject. Follow the amazing and brilliant leaders in this area: Dr. Dale Bredesen, Dr. Perlmutter, Dave Asbry (book: Headstrong), and more.
6. Practice meditation/control stress. Studies are showing that meditation actually increases the size of the hippocampus – where we first see size reduction with the disease. Don’t know how? The free Headspace app on your phone will get you started.
7. Exercise. It helps everything.
8. As you fight for your brain, share the message!
