Monthly Message from the City Manager Ken Striplin Are you Ready for Rain?
In drought-prone California, we know we need the rain. Seeing the precipitation falling from the sky is a welcome sight after our hot summer and dry autumn. However, winter storms bring with them dangerous road conditions, possibilities for mudslides and flooding. So, I ask…are you Ready for Rain?
Mudslides and floods can be very destructive. We want to do everything we can to reduce the impact unpredicted heavy rains may have on our landscape, parks, open spaces, streets, your homes and businesses in Santa Clarita.
City staff is already working on preventive measures, such as clearing storm drains, conducting City facility inspections, removing problematic trees and clearing debris on the streets. Street sweeping is conducted weekly in the fall and winter to help minimize impacts to the storm drain system.
You should take the time to make sure your home is rain-ready. Clear out all drains and rain gutters. If you have a rain barrel, check to make sure that the downspouts are clear of debris. It would also be a good idea to check your roof for any holes or loose tiles.
During the rain, be aware of roadway warnings and hazards while driving. If you see a flooded area, please do not walk or drive through it. Just a few inches of water can sweep you off your feet. Keep away from downed power lines and electrical wires as well. In the event of an emergency, dial 9-1-1.
Instead of hoping for the best, you should plan and prepare for the worst. To stay informed and receive local emergency alerts, sign up at www.santa-clarita.com/ealerts or text SCEmergency to 888777.
