As You Tidy Up!
Spring is always a busy time for Assistance League Resale. As our donors put things away after the holidays, they often decide to donate items, rather than keep them. This year something additional has happened, and our store has been the beneficiary of even more donations than usual.
We think we know why. A few years ago, Marie Kondo wrote a very interesting book called The Magic of Tidying Up. Netflix now has a show called Tidying Up. It features Marie Kondo, a lively, charming woman teaching her tidying method she calls KonMari. There is one season of episodes where she visits families who are disorganized, have too much stuff, or just really cannot let things go. Marie’s theory is that if your clothes, shoes, books, dishes, papers and mementos don’t fit, are outdated, are no longer used, or are not needed, but mostly, do not “Spark Joy” (Marie’s words), then let them go. Give them to someone else, throw them away, or donate them. The results of “tidying up” are miraculous, bringing much more comfort and peacefulness to the families she has guided through KonMari.
Many of our customers have mentioned that they have watched this show as they arrive at our backdoor with their cars filled with things that are no longer bringing them joy. They tell us they will be back with more as they continue to evaluate items in their homes. The result is Assistance League Resale is filled with some very lovely things. Though they may have stopped bringing joy to one person, our volunteers witness them sparking joy in someone else.
Our store is run completely by our member/volunteers, and all proceeds fund our philanthropic programs that benefit and transform the lives of families and individuals in our Santa Clarita community. Please continue to bring us your donations and come in to shop. You may find something that truly sparks joy.
