Bad Brushing Habits to Break in 2019
As we begin the New Year, it is common to have resolutions to follow to break harmful habits especially when it comes to making changes in our lives to stay fit and healthy. Not only should we start eating and living healthy, we should also try to incorporate these habits to our dental health.
The first habit we should start with is not keeping your toothbrush too long. The American Dental Association recommends changing your toothbrush every three to four months. Frayed and broken bristles won’t keep your teeth clean. When choosing a toothbrush, look for one with the ADA seal of acceptance. Second is, not brushing long enough. Teeth should be brushed for a full two minutes at least twice per day. Third is brushing too hard. You may think that brushing harder will remover more leftover foods and the bacteria. Be gentle when brushing your teeth as too much pressure may damage your teeth and your gums. Fourth is storing your toothbrush improperly. When you are done brushing, keep your toothbrush upright and let it dry in the open. Avoid keeping your toothbrush in a closed container where germs have more opportunity to grow. Fifth is using a toothbrush with hard bristles. Make sure to always use bristles that are soft. Sixth is improper brushing technique. Make sure to hold your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to the gums. This help ensure that you are not cleaning your teeth but also a little below the gums where food and bacteria could be trapped. Lastly, don’t forget to visit your dental health professionals regularly to make sure that your gums and teeth are in tip top shape.
