Control the “Alzheimer’s Gene”
As an Elder Law and Estate Planning attorney, I meet with people every day who are dealing with a family member, or themselves, affected by Alzheimer’s disease. After years of being told “there is no cure, and no prevention”, we now know better. It is critical that every person look at, and understand, the various risk factors.
Although there are many factors to consider when determining your risk for Alzheimer’s disease, carrying the APOE4 allele (“Alzheimer’s gene”) is clearly associated with an increased risk. I am always surprised that many people say “I don’t want to know”. However, what you do know allows you to be pro-active and change an otherwise tragic outcome!
Testing for APOE4 is easy, especially through 23andme.com. Having one copy of APOE4 increases your risk for the disease, while two copies significantly increases your risk. Once you know your genetics, important lifestyle choices can be implemented. Research shows that these choices can offset genetic risks. Here are a few of my favorite educational sources for APOE4 persons:
Dr. Ben Lynch (Alzheimer’s Dirty Gene APOE4) https://youtu.be/lYXPK69mKK8
Dr. Steven Gundry (Dietary Management of the APOE4) https://youtu.be/Bfr9RPq0HFg
Website: www.Apoe4.info
Dr. Dale Bredesen (APOE4 Mechanistics) https://youtu.be/s86wpaF-7XI
If you carry the single or double APOE4 gene, take action and protect yourself. Understand what you need to do, and be your own advocate. You cannot change your genes. However, you CAN make important choices that offset the genetic risk as it relates to Alzheimer’s Disease. There is no “magic pill” to cure this disease. But, the data is very clear that lifestyle and diet choices can change the outcome.
