One Story One City – Let’s All Read Together from Mayor Marsha McLean
“…every story, every dream, every moment of our waking lives is filled with one fateful coincidence after another.” – From “The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane” by Lisa See
There is nothing quite as inspirational as discovering a story that takes you on a journey. A story which evokes strong emotions from love to hate. A story that makes you laugh out loud, or sends tears cascading down your face.
I invite you to come along on a literary journey as a community. Our popular citywide reading program, One Story One City, returns this month with the book “The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane” by Lisa See.
Described as a lush tale – rich with traditions – it will inspire reflection and discussion amongst readers and an overwhelming desire to drink rare Chinese tea. The book focuses on the complexities of the enduring connection between mothers and daughters and how decisions and chance can forever change the path of someone’s life.
To participate in this year’s One Story One City reading event, simply pick up a copy of “The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane” from your Santa Clarita Public Library branch and enjoy the story. Then check out the website OneStoryOneCity.SantaClaritaLibrary.com to find out what events, discussions, crafts and experiences await you!
Participants will have a chance to hear from the author herself, as Lisa See shares her research process, highlights from the book and answers your questions. The author visit will take place on March 2, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. at the Newhall Family Theater. You can further immerse yourself in the flavor of Chinese tea as you take part in a traditional tea ceremony, learn how to make tea cakes and sip authentic Pu-erh tea during a special tasting.
I encourage all of you to take part in this unique program that creates community by encouraging City-wide discussions and engagement. I can’t wait to hear your thoughts on “The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane.”
