Interview with a Cat Doctor
Dr. Megan Thomas has joined our team as a full-time veterinarian in March. I sat down with Dr. Megan and asked her a few questions that would help cat owners get to know her as a feline only veterinarian.
What is the best part of being a cat doctor? Dr. Megan, “Seeing kitties all day and talking with their people.”
What are the top three health concerns for cats? Dr. Megan, “I’m going to split this into two groups, older kitties and any age kitties. For the older cats: Kidney disease, hyperthyroidism, and cancer. For the any age cats: heart disease, infectious diseases, and dental problems.”
As a cat owner, what is the most important thing I can do for my cat? Dr. Megan, “Bring your cat in for regular check-ups! Cats hide illness very well – even from their special people – and it’s always much better to catch problems early rather than late.”
My cat does not like going to vet, what can I do to get her in to see you? Dr. Megan, “That’s a great question and I’m happy to help here. It starts with a good sturdy carrier that has 2 openings, usually one on the top and one on the end. I always leave a carrier out and open, off to the side in my living room, so that my cats can explore the carrier on their terms. I often put comfy bedding, toys, or even a treat in the carrier. Sometimes, I get home and one of them is asleep in there. I started making “Happy Cat Kits” several years ago. These affordable kits include various cat only products that have been scientifically tested and proven to help cats relax. The Happy Cat Kit comes in a small cute cat-bag with all the instructions and are available to our clients. The less stressful we can make the trip to the vet for cats, the better the patient will feel, and the less stressful it will be for the owner. Lastly, stay calm! Cats can sense our anxiety and that can cause them to become fearful and anxious.”
