Celebrate National Stay Out of The Sun Day
Summertime can be a delightful season for seniors. While the hot weather and sun tends to entice us to retreat outdoors and to be more active, it can create discomfort for seniors. Seniors are more susceptible to dehydration and heat exhaustion and extremely hot weather may make an otherwise strong person feel weak.
You and your senior loved one can enjoy the summer without having to brave the heat. July 3 of each calendar year is National Stay Out of the Sun Day, a holiday which promotes healthy skin and physical self-care. This holiday encourages participants to either stay indoors or choose shade over sunlight. The following are ways you can celebrate with your senior loved one.
• Enjoy a seasonally-inspired meal indoors or on a shaded outdoor patio. Whether visiting a restaurant or enjoying a homecooked meal, sitting and talking with your loved one while eating together is a wonderful way to enjoy each other’s company and appreciate the season. Summer offers a variety of delicious produce, including peaches, melons, carrots, strawberries and tomatoes.
• See a movie. Movie theaters provide a fun and enticing refuge from the heat and UV light.
• Find a shady spot for a picnic. Sit under a tree and enjoy natural scenery or appreciate the outdoors from underneath a pop-up or patio awning. Wear breathable clothing and make sure to bring plenty of water to stay hydrated and cool.
Summer is a great time to relax with your senior loved one while promoting physical health and taking care of your skin. We hope you will celebrate National Stay Out of the Sun Day!
