Older Cats
Do you have a beloved older cat? Older cats are so special, often more bonded to us, in some ways more dependent on us, and sometimes slowed down enough to love a good nap in someone’s lap.
Middle aged cats are generally considered to be seven to 10 years of age, senior cats 10 to 14, geriatric cats 14 to 18, and “super seniors” 18 years and older. While we can often keep our cat companions with us for many years, sadly the average lifespan of an indoor cat is still only 14 years. Older cats are more prone to kidney disease, elevated thyroid levels (hyperthyroidism), cancer, high blood pressure, arthritis, dental pain, and many others – much like their humans.
We can extend our elder cats’ life expectancy by finding and treating medical issues early – before they can cause much damage or spread to other organs (as with cancer) or cause excessive weight and/or muscle loss. This means bringing your kitty in for regular examinations, and that will often include blood pressure measurement, blood panels, and possibly x-rays or ultrasound.
We do realize that your cat may not be willingly get into a carrier and come happily (and silently) to the vet. There are some things we can do to help, and some things you can do at home to make vet visits easier. One is to have the carrier – or at least the base of it – in the house as your cat’s bed. (Google Sleepy Pods!) Then when you put the carrier together, it’s more like home and less stressful. We can help by providing a very mild sedative which will reduce your cat’s anxiety, and you can give at home before the trip. If you have Feliway spray – spray it into the carrier before-hand. Or Rescue Remedy – put a few drops on your hands and rub into your cat’s coat.
At The Cat Doctor & Friends we, as a team, are committed to keeping your cat as healthy as possible, for as long as possible; while handling gently and minimizing the stress involved.
