Earthquakes And Your Pets
Given the large earthquakes we experienced last month, I thought it would be a good idea to send out some reminders of what to do with our pets in case of such an emergency. While myths suggest that dogs and other animals can “predict” earthquakes, it doesn’t mean that they can fend for themselves when disaster strikes. Its best to be prepared! I highly recommend making an emergency kit for your pets as well as yourself.
For the pet emergency kits make sure you have the following: several days’ worth of non-perishable food (canned and/or dry food), water, bowls to put the food and water in, a crate or carrier, blankets, any medications that your pet consistently needs, a current photo of your pet, identification as well as microchip information, and copies of vaccination records. Look online or call the microchip company to verify that they have a current phone number and address so that if your pet were to get lost during the disaster, it’s easier for them to be reunited with you. During the earthquake you should duck and cover. If you can safely grab your pets to have them cover with you then do so. But do not put yourself into danger trying to reach your pet. If they run, they are likely going to seek out their own hiding place. Do not just open the door and let them run outside! Wait until after the shaking stops to find your pet and get them out to safety. Keep a leash close to an exit so it’s easy to find and keep them under control with you while you leave the building.
Practicing earthquake drills with your pets in your home may help as well. It may sound silly, but if they are more used to the drill of ducking and covering with you then you may have an easier time when its truly necessary.
