The Superbloom Aftermath!
This past spring has brought some rare occurrences to our valley: rain, green hills, and beautiful flowers. Unfortunately, this has created an unprecedented amount of pollens! This phenomenon has been called the “Superbloom”. Nationally, this has led to an increase in symptoms among allergy sufferers. In our valley, patients who have been under control for years are having a more difficult time, especially in the last few months. How do we deal with such a difficult season?
The first thing is to start simple. Start treatment before symptoms are severe. Salt water rinses, some natural oils, antihistamines and steroid nasal sprays are part of a good regimen. Once you have the “terrible three” symptoms: (1) severe congestion ,(2) pressure headaches, (3) thick mucus in the throat, then you need to consult a medical professional for intermediate care.
This year, we have noticed that many patients are not responding to even intermediate care. What is one to do? In the past, basically we were left with high doses of steroids or antibiotics. In patients who were miserable for months, surgery was the last option.
Over the last few years, an advanced technique called balloon sinuplasty has evolved. This method allows us to treat patients in the office, with a reduced down-time! A gentle sedative is used. The natural sinus openings are expanded to allow pressure relief and restore drainage. Patients sometimes feel better instantly.
With advanced techniques and technology, you do not need to suffer. Treat your sinus and allergy problems and actually enjoy the green hills and abundant flowers!
