How to Transition Your Kids From Summer to a School Schedule
For kids, summer is filled with long days and nights outside, and sleeping in. School is back in session this month, so it is important to start transitioning your child from summer fun back to a school schedule soon. By creating a smooth transition for you child, this will allow them to be rested, motivated, and ready to jump back into a structured school routine. Allow this process to start at least two weeks before the first week of school.
Waking up early could be a struggle for most children especially if they have been sleeping in for the past two months. Two weeks prior to school, begin waking your children up at the designated time they will wake up when school begins.
This will give your children ample amount of time to adjust to their new sleeping cycle– a cycle they will engage in for the next year. This process gives kids a head start at restarting their routines.
Try planning brain-stimulating activities like cross word puzzles, Sudoku games, word searches, or reading in the weeks prior to the first day of school. This is a way to sharpen your child’s skill set and their intelligence. Summer often plays as a buffer period where children want nothing to do with school, so it is crucial to incorporate these fun activities to stimulate brain activity.
Leading up to school, be sure to establish goals and a game plan with your children for what they want to accomplish in the school year. Highlight the skills your child has and how they can grow as a student and or individual. These goals could include academic ones like reaching a certain reading goal or they can be personal like talking to someone new every day. Having this discussion early could help encourage your child’s growth since their goals are already in mind.
This month, help make this difficult transition a little easier for your children by taking the time to implement these steps into their life.
