Laughing with Di – September 2019
Improvisation. Not just being comedic and throwing out dialogue that pops into your head. It is also when you want to do something, you don’t have the right tool for the job, and you make up something. My dad’s favorite saying was, “Necessity is the mother of invention.”
Let’s have a laugh.
Current hairdos. Back in the day, we would “rat” our hair, pile it up or smooth it out and then spray the heck out of it! Our hair was locked in, not a strand out of place, immovable – and I lived in the Windy City. I wound my hair around giant rollers and slept on them to make curls in the morning. The “Sassoon” was popular – short and long at the same time. Styles ranged from “Twiggy” short to “Shrimpton” long, pageboy, flip, bangs or the ubiquitous hippy look.
While waiting to retrieve my grandson from the SC Soccer Center, I watched a teen perform a “hair” task. She took a hairband off her wrist, put her hair in a pony tail, tightened it and then with her thumb and forefinger pulled the exact amount of hair out of the tail on each side of her face to form the wisps that I don’t understand at all. What is their purpose? It seems traditional bracelets are out of style and have been replaced by hair ties and/or scrunchies, in multiple colors worn together as the new jewelry.
Twirling a ponytail, pulling it up on your head and securing it with a clip is an improvised French roll. Twisting a ponytail on the top of your head, then adding another tie is an improvised bun. Currently, hair-dos can be wavy, stringy, messy, or half-shaved arrangements in every color imaginable.
For me, the shorter the better so I can improvise a perfectly neat and smooth look – until I put on a baseball cap.
