What Should You Do when your child freezes on math tests?
Do you believe that exceptional math students: perform computations fast; memorize lots of facts, formulas, and procedures easily; score high grades on exams; and work well under pressure? If so, your beliefs about the essence of mathematical understanding may be rooted in misconceptions. In fact, students who understand number relationships and how to solve complex problems are the exceptional ones.
It is true that high-stakes exams can limit a child’s educational opportunities in mathematics; but focusing on rote memorization and speed leaves many students bored, nervous, or worse, doubting their own abilities in mathematics.
Students endure high pressure testing starting at a young age. Teachers frequently give timed tests that emphasize speed over deep mathematical thinking. This type of testing can lead to the development of math anxiety. These feelings interfere with learning or remembering math facts; ultimately making things worse. In fact, anxiety hinders the part of the brain where math facts are stored!
This approach has resulted in high numbers of students dropping out of math and decreasing numbers of students in STEM-based college majors.
The feelings of inadequacy developed at a young age translate to fear in taking advanced courses at the high school level. Tutoring can be a life-changing experience for these students. The tutor supports the student by providing additional explanations, supporting more productive test preparation, and encouraging self-confidence.
All students at every ability level find the one-on-one approach we provide beneficial and motivating!
