Household Hazardous Waste Here’s What You Should Know
As residents of Santa Clarita, we are fortunate to have many green resources like the City’s Pace Bike Share Pilot Program, or Electric Vehicle (EV) charging stations located throughout the valley. Protecting the environment does not stop at eco-friendly transportation alternatives. The proper disposal of Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) and used oil are steps in the City’s efforts toward a more sustainable future, and the City is here to help!
Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) are items like paint, pesticides and electronic waste; however, there are many other household items that may seem non-toxic, but are very harmful to the environment if not disposed of properly. Items like pool chemicals, household cleaners, automotive fluids, medication and needles, beauty products, batteries and compact fluorescent light bulbs are all considered HHW items. Throughout the year, these products can be dropped off for free at Solvents, Automotive, Flammables and Electronics (S.A.F.E.) collection centers in Sun Valley and Northridge. S.A.F.E. collection centers are open Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and can be reached at 1-800-988-6942 to verify current hours of operation. For more information on how to properly dispose of your HHW products, please visit www.GreenSantaClarita.com.
The City of Santa Clarita has also partnered with the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works and the Los Angeles County Sanitation District to offer residents an HHW Round Up event on Saturday, November 16, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at College of the Canyons at 26455 Rockwell Canyon Road. This free event is a great opportunity to drop-off unwanted household chemicals, electronic waste, and lancets/sharps (needles). Attendees are limited to dropping off 15-gallons or 125-pounds of waste per vehicle.
Explosives, ammunition, waste from businesses, regular household trash, tires, or white goods such as washers, dryers, stoves, refrigerators, or air conditioners will not be accepted at this event.
Used motor oil and filters in cars, motorcycles or RV’s do not belong in your regular trash cart or recycling containers either. Boasting over 20 certified collection centers that recycle used motor oil and filters for free, Santa Clarita makes recycling easy! Please visit www.GreenSantaClarita.com to find a collection center near you today!
You can reserve a free oil change kit for pick up at City Hall, while supplies last, by calling 661-286-4098.
The City is excited to partner with residents and neighboring communities in the effort to protect Santa Clarita’s natural beauty. For more information regarding additional eco-friendly resources and events, please visit www.GreenSantaClarita.com.
