Laughing with Di – December 2019
Simplicity. We need more of it in this world. Like simple gratitude, as demonstrated by the full-page ad placed in the LA Times by The Getty Center thanking all responders in and around Los Angeles and SoCal who helped protect their buildings and grounds during the recent fire danger.
Or, the amusing but simple explanation used by my grandson recently to describe why he had a bruise above his eye. He said, “Grandma, if this chair was somebody else, the guy behind me threw the basketball to the somebody else (the chair), it bounced off him (pretending to be the chair; then turning around) and hit me in the eye.” He used his simple, in-the-moment logic and demonstration to help me visualize what happened in his story. Of course, I was loving the humor behind his wonderful imagination and our friend, the chair.
Here are some favorite excerpts from student papers that will simply put a smile on your face and make you laugh.
“They were singing without accompaniment. You know, Acapulco.”
“There are three kinds of blood vessels: arteries, vanes and caterpillars.”
“A fossil is an extinct animal. The older it is, the more extinct it is.”
“The Greeks invented three kinds of columns: Corinthian, ironic and dorc. They also had myths. A myth is a female moth.”

I would simply like a simpler world. One or two pizza dough choices – not ten! Walking into a theater, buying a ticket, finding a seat and sitting down – no reservation needed! Simple explanations, “Officer, I was coasting down the hill – not speeding!” Every can should have a flip-tab – simple. Simply driving away from it all in my Porsche 911 Turbo. You know, like if I were somebody else.
So, keep it simple. Have a wonderful holiday everyone!
