A New Year’s Resolution for Your Dental Health
The New Year is here and one of the best ways is to start it off with a smile. Getting those pearly whites to shine doesn’t take a lot of work. Here are a few tips for the New Year to keep you smiling.
Eat healthier and cut back on processed food and sugars. Studies have shown that there is a direct link between too much sugar and cavities, not to mention other health concerns.
Schedule a dental appointment to see your Dentist and Hygienist. This is the best way to start the New Year with clean and cavity-free teeth. Going for regular check-ups avoids longer and costlier dental treatments that stem from gum disease and untreated cavities.
Brushing twice a day is important but flossing is also equally important. Commit to flossing daily as it removes all the plaque and foods, we have eaten throughout the day, so it doesn’t fester and cause gum disease and cavities. There are many ways to make it easier such as putting it right next to your toothbrush and flossing while watching television or taking a shower.
Kicking any habits that are detrimental to your teeth and gums are always beneficial. If you smoke or chew tobacco, pick a date to give it up, solicit help from family, friends, health practitioner or a support group, get rid of all the products, and replace the activity with something healthy and useful. Avoid habits like biting your nails or cuticles, opening things with your teeth, holding things with your teeth, and grinding and clenching which can all damage teeth.
