SRD Straightening Reins A Tribute to Belle
There is an expression at SRD Straightening Reins, “our rescued animals rescue our kids” and Belle was one of those beautiful white spotted mares who worked to help children and their families lessen their stress and anxiety. Belle was rescued from a slaughter truck arriving at SRD abused, scared and fragile five years ago. Her eyes told the story of her own past and therefore she knew how to be gentle with those children who needed to hug and love her. Little hands would brush and feed Belle as she calmly stood near them listening to their stories.
Anyone who has ever had an animal knows the bond that occurs if one allows love and compassion to grow between them. Studies have proven that children while working under the guidance and supervision of an equine therapist, have a unique and effective opportunity to note their tendency to engage in self-defeating and otherwise negative thoughts and actions. These realizations provide excellent bases for discussion and processing both during and after the equine therapy experience. Horses can reflect back certain behaviors that children identify with since their personalities also vary based on their own past experiences.
Belle was all that for many children but sadly she succumbed to old age in late November. She took her last breath surrounded by those who loved and cherished her leaving a legacy of healing behind. She will be remembered by all who knew her.
SRD Straightening Reins has since moved to a new ranch site in Castaic which has a wonderful arena and a pasture for the herd to run and play in. Please come and visit the herd at the new site. Visit our website at https://srdstraignteningreins.org/.
