What is Tumescent Anesthesia?
Tumescent anesthesia is simply a mix of saline, lidocaine (a local anesthetic), epinephrine (a blood vessel constrictor), and sodium bicarbonate (a buffer). This mixture is injected into tissue, providing a profound and prolonged anesthetic effect. This is what has allowed painful varicose vein stripping in the operating room to be transformed into a minimally invasive procedure requiring just a needle puncture in the office. General anesthesia, one of the major risks associated with these procedures, is no longer necessary.
