There Are So Many Types of Mouthwash Which is Best for Me?
So many types of mouthwash choices and flavors. What do they all mean? Which is the right mouthwash for my family’s need?
Antiseptic Mouthwash: The all-important element in antiseptic mouthwashes is chlorhexidine gluconate (which is a fancy way of naming a bacteria-killing ingredient). It is able to stop the growth of bacteria, which can be appropriate for those who are suffering from an oral infection or used to combat bad breath. Note: Overuse of an antiseptic mouthwash may cause tooth discoloration.
Fluoride Mouthwash: Fluoride mouthwash contains sodium fluoride which strengthens enamel and helps prevent tooth decay. Many may not need additional fluoride if they receive enough from their water or toothpaste, but may benefit from the extra protection. Be aware: fluoride mouthwash is not recommended for children under six.
Cosmetic Mouthwash: This type of mouthwash is mostly used to give people that extra burst of fresh breath, but doesn’t really do much against fighting decay, strengthening tooth enamel, or protecting teeth. A word of caution: mouthwash that contains alcohol may dry out the mouth and cause more dental problems.
Natural Mouthwash: For a natural mouthwash, choose ones that are free of fluoride or alcohol. The most common natural mouthwash comes in the form of warm water and salt. Warm saltwater can reduce inflammation, ease gum bleeding, and fight against bacteria. Remember: don’t swallow the saltwater, just swish.
Remember that a mouthwash/rinse is not a replacement for a regular tooth brushing, rather it’s a complement to your daily brushing and flossing. Also, don’t forget to schedule your checkups with your dentist at least twice a year.
