Basics of Dental Implants

A dental implant is a titanium “root” device used in dentistry to support restorations that resemble a tooth or group of teeth to replace missing teeth. Dental implants can be used to support a number of dental prostheses, including crowns, implant-supported bridges or dentures.

So, what are the basic steps to a dental implant?
After a complete dental exam, which includes: photos, study models, periodontal assessment, we take a digital image using an Advanced Digital Panoramic unit, which allows us to determine the bone level.
For a simple missing tooth, the first appointment takes about 1 hour, it is done under local anesthetic, however for our apprehensive patients, we have Nitrous Oxide.
Once the dental implant is placed, another digital image is taken to confirm proper seating of the implant. At this point, we placed a temporary on top of the implant and usually we see the patient in about four months time. This is an important stage, as it allows the implant to Osseointegrate, which basically means it becomes part of your jaw, just like any other teeth!
In four months time, we remove the temporary, check to make sure the Implant is stable, which in over 95 percent of cases is successful. Then we simply take an impression of the dental implant, this does not require any drilling. Finally, in two weeks time, the final porcelain crow is ready for delivery. This appointment also does not require any anesthesia.
