Tips for Better Communication
When family and friends gather, it’s important that everyone feels included. Large group settings can make it difficult for people with hearing loss to feel a part of the conversation. Luckily, there are techniques that both the listener and speaker can use to keep communication open.
Getting and Keeping Someone’s Attention
If you’d like to address a person with hearing loss, get their attention first. You can do this by calling their name, gently touching their shoulder, arm, or hand, and by making eye contact. You also want to make sure your loved one can see your face. People who have hearing loss often rely on visual cues, such as mouth movements and expressions. Avoid speaking to them with gum or food in your mouth so you’re easier to understand.
Tips for Being Understood
Whether you’re catching up with someone you haven’t seen for a while or you’re simply asking for someone to pass a dish, effective communication is key. One of the most important things you can do is speak clearly in a normal tone. Raising the volume of your voice may not help, nor will speaking slowly.
Making Accommodations
If you’re the host, there are some adaptations you can make to help someone with hearing loss feel welcomed. Ask them beforehand if there is anything you can do to accommodate them. Talking to them directly to learn about their communication needs is better than guessing. Generally, it’s helpful to minimize background noise. You can still play music or have the television on but keep the volume low.
Make the Most Out of Time Together
With help from these communication tips, all your friends and family will feel included.
