A Very Special Menorah and her Eight Rays of Light
This holiday season, instead of staying home with our family and friends to eat, relax, and open gifts, we hooked up our Beyond Meat Rescue Trailer instead and started driving on Christmas morning to Washington State to rescue a family of pigs. A pig was purchased to eat for Christmas dinner, but when she unexpectedly gave birth, the family wanted to save her instead of eat her. We drove two days from CA to WA, loaded the piggy family into our very warm and cozy trailer, and then drove twenty two hours straight through the night to reach The Gentle Barn by the next morning; stopping only for bathroom breaks for us and warm water and food breaks for the pigs.
The new pigs acclimated to our barnyard very quickly, and relished in splashing in the pool, snuggling down for naps in the soft hay, and exploring the barnyard. The piglets were shy at first but soon rolled over for tummy rubs and climbed into our laps for affection. They have filled our barnyard with joy, happiness, and laughter and we are ecstatic to have them! We did a naming auction to get the community involved and to raise funds for their care, the only criteria was that the names had to be holiday names. After a few days we gathered up all the entries, put them in a hat and picked out eight names. We called the mom Menorah, and the babies are named Mistletoe, Blitzen, Dreidel, Holly, Gingerbread, Tinsel, Miracle, and Noelle. Come visit them!
The Gentle Barn is located in Santa Clarita, just thirty minutes north of Los Angeles. We rescue animals who are too old, too sick, too lame, or too scared to be adoptable. We are home to horses, donkeys, cows, pigs, sheep, goats, turkeys, chickens, llamas, emus, dogs, and we even have a rescued pigeon and a parrot. We are host to children who are underserved, at risk, or who have special needs. We are open to visitors on Sundays, and host private tours, birthday parties and special events. To come meet our new piggy family, go to www.gentlebarn.org and follow The Gentle Barn on Face Book, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube. You are sure to fall in love!
