Laughing with Di – March 2020
How does one find oneself at the Egg Plantation (for example) in downtown Newhall, or any of the many breakfast restaurant choices in Santa Clarita on a Sunday morning?
Let’s have a laugh.
One egg, milk, butter, jelly, cinnamon, bread, coffee cup, spoon, sugar, coffee packet, salt, measuring cup, pan, bowl, plate, knife, fork, whisk, flipper. Shopping list? Kitchen inventory?
No. These ingredients, utensils, implements, condiments, devices, contrivances, silverware, tableware, instruments, appliances, equipment – a count totaling nineteen (!) – were arrayed on my kitchen counter as I prepared to make a homemade breakfast. Can you imagine how much space was used here? Two-and-a-half feet. After assembling all this stuff, in order to make just one slice of French toast, by the way, I actually took a step back to chuckle at the absurdity of it all.
So, the egg would be whisked in the bowl, adding a bit of salt and cinnamon. A little butter in the pan, dip the bread in the egg and into the pan it goes. Meanwhile, microwave a measuring cup of water to pour into the coffee cup already containing instant coffee and sugar. Add a quick pour of milk and stir. Flip the bread and when ready, place on the plate, add some jelly, eat with knife and fork. Yummy, right?
Then there would be the clean up, dish washing, dish drying and replacement of all items to their proper place – cabinet, refrigerator, drawer.
I really wanted French toast. Getting dressed and into the car, driving, searching for a parking place, and waiting for a table could not negatively influence my decision to, you guessed it, eat out! And, on the restaurant table was a coffee cup, plate, knife, fork and spoon. Not my responsibility. Pretty simple.
Whatever will I do about lunch?
