Seniors in the Workplace: A Growing Phenomenom
More and more people are working into their 60s, 70s and 80s. The Bureau of Labor and Statistics projects that by 2024 the labor force will grow to about 164 million people, and 13 million of that group will be 65 and older.
Unfortunately, there are misconceptions about older workers. Employers often believe that older workers are not as productive as their younger counterparts. However, this is simply not true. A recent study reported by AARP, quoting Peter Capelli, management professor at the Wharton School of Business, found that “every aspect of job performance gets better as we age. I thought the picture might be more mixed, but it isn’t. The juxtaposition between the superior performance of older workers and the discrimination against them just really makes no sense.” According to AARP, experience helps overcome any physical and mental changes that come with aging. It is good to know that many groups are working to change these untrue and unfair misconceptions about older workers.
So, older worker, go for it! Perhaps, you would like to consider starting your own business, or instead, focus on finding work with companies who value experienced workers. It’s always helpful and fun to brush up on computer skills, network, and research local companies to see what may interest you. And don’t forget about joining LinkedIn and using websites dedicated to finding jobs for the senior population.
There is much to look forward to. As Ingrid Bergman once said, “Getting old is like climbing a mountain; you get a little out of breath, but the view is much better!”
