COVID-19 and Pets
I’m sure by now most of you have heard news that a few pets have tested positive for COVID-19. Each of the animals that have been tested had all been from homes where their owners were positive for COVID-19. Each of the animals had been exposed because of their humans. None of the dogs ever showed any clinical signs for the disease, and only one cat had respiratory and gastrointestinal signs. Not enough is known about the cat and any underlying conditions it may have had to contribute to such signs. Reports say that lions and tigers at the Bronx Zoo were showing respiratory signs. One tiger was tested and shown to be positive for COVID-19. Only one animal was tested in this circumstance because testing requires sedation, which can be risky for the big cats. It was determined again that this was from human exposure- their keeper had been positive and was ill. Not once has there been any evidence that an animal sheds the virus and causes spread to humans. Even so, out of an abundance of caution, it is recommended that if you are sick with COVID-19 that you limit your contact with your pets just like you would limit your interactions with humans. When at all possible have another person feed and care for your pets. If you must be the one to continue to care for your pets, then wear a facemask and wash your hands before and after interactions with them. If you are healthy, then no changes need to be made and you can interact and care for them as you always have. Veterinary staff are considered essential workers so we remain open and here to help with any concerns you may have. Most veterinary clinics are offering curb side services only in order to continue to practice social distancing and keep you, ourselves and our staff safe and healthy. At this time, routine COVID testing for pets is not recommended or being done. If your pet is ill then your veterinarian will test for more common pathogens or conditions first.
