Veterinary Care in the Time of Coronavirus,
Part 2: I hope this month’s article finds you and your loved ones safe and healthy. I can’t believe I’ve written three articles with the Coronavirus theme. Unfortunately, there may be more months to go before we return to normalcy or whatever the new normal will be. Our veterinary hospital remains open and busier than ever before to help you and your pets. Thank you for your support.
We continue to see a lot of allergy issues this time of year, but we are also seeing some other issues. Here are some things to watch for.
1. Overheating. This is a carry-over from last month, but we are seeing more burnt paws and signs of heat stress as the weather warms up.
2. Insect bites. Bee stings, ant bites, spider bites are on the rise as pets spend more time outside. Watch for signs of an allergic reaction: facial swelling, vomiting, acute collapse.
3. Snakes. Rattlesnakes are out and about. Watch closely for brush on trails and keep your dogs on a leash.
4. Separation anxiety. This is going to become a big problem as people start to go back to work and our animals have to get used to being alone. Start by leaving your pets for a few hours at a time to make the transition easier.
As people continue to stay at home, let’s keep our pets as healthy as we can. Call us if you need anything; we are here for you and your animals. Stay safe, be kind to one another, and wash your hands.
