Diabetes and Oral Health
Diabetes is a common condition affecting millions of people. Diabetes affects several organs and systems throughout the body. One of the most well- known complications of diabetes include heart disease, poor blood circulation, diminished eyesight and kidney function, slower healing of wounds and a reduced resistance to infections.
Oral health is also associated with diabetes. Good oral health is possible if the blood glucose levels can be maintained and the mouth is well looked after through daily oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups.
Research has proven that there is a direct correlation between diabetes and oral health. People with diabetes often experiences gum disease, dry-mouth, root caries (tooth decay of the root of the tooth), fungal infections, denture problems, and poor healing.
Gum diseases are a complication of diabetes because it results to a stronger inflammatory response to dental plaque. The more severe form of gum disease leads to the destruction of the bone which can lead to loss of teeth. Dry mouth is due to a decrease in saliva production. Saliva is important for good oral health through cleansing the mouth of food debris that may lead to dental decay, protecting the tissues by lubrication enabling speech and swallowing and providing plentiful supplies of minerals to nourish the teeth. How can you improve your oral health when you have diabetes? First step is selecting the right tool that can positively influence the outcome. Start with selecting a soft bristled toothbrush to gently remove plaque, brush and floss at least twice a day, visit your dental professionals often, control your blood glucose level, take the best care of your teeth and gums every day. Good oral hygiene and plaque control are essential for a healthy mouth and body. Use fluoride toothpaste to help prevent dental decay. By following these recommendations, it is a sure way to keep dental decay at bay and maintain good oral and over all body health.
