What is Deep TMS?
Many folks think of mental health treatment as traditional talk therapy, but there are actually a lot of treatment modalities out there. Just like every person’s brain is different, not everyone will respond to treatment in the same way, so having a wide range of treatment options is practical. Some people are able to find mental health relief with simple lifestyle changes, while others need the support of a therapist or medication, and some folks need more than that. Some of the treatment options you might not be as familiar with are hypnotherapy, Ketamine Therapy, TMS Therapy, and Deep Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS).
Deep TMS is an FDA approved treatment for depression, PTSD, and obsessive-compulsive disorders. It’s also been shown to be effective in treating bipolar disorder. There are two types of TMS: Deep TMS and standard TMS. Both of these treatment types use magnetic pulses to stimulate certain areas of the brain. Some researchers believe that certain mental illnesses come from overactive or underactive areas neurons in our brain structures. If we can manipulate the activity of the neurons in these parts of the brain, we can treat issues like depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder, even when they’ve resisted treatment in the past. Deep TMS and TMS are both treatments based on this same idea, but Deep TMS uses a different type of coil (which the user wears) to stimulate brain activity deeper than traditional TMS.
What makes Deep TMS different?
When you think of other treatments for mental health you might think of things like Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT). ECT has been popularized in the media over the last 50 or so years, and so it’s often the first thing we think of when we think of cranial treatments for mental health. While ECT is a type of cranial therapy, just like TMS and Deep TMS, ECT is a totally different type of treatment. ECT is an invasive procedure that needs to be done in a hospital setting, and it uses electricity to induce a seizure or series of seizures and can sometimes cause mild to serious side effects. Deep TMS, on the other hand, is non-invasive, and can be done in a provider’s office. You can even drive yourself home after!
What happens during a Deep TMS Session?
One important note about Deep TMS is that it’s a drug-free treatment. Deep TMS treatment starts with putting on a helmet that contains an electromagnetic coil. This coil is what will be used to stimulate your brain, via magnets. During treatment, the coil sends a magnetic pulse to your brain. The pulse goes to the part of your brain that’s responsible for emotional regulation. Don’t worry – this is totally painless. The treatment lasts about 20 minutes, but our clients see the best results when they come in for repetitive sessions over a short period of time. Many folks see a major difference in as little as four weeks of consistent Deep TMS treatment. While you’re wearing the helmet in your session, you’ll be seated so you’re as comfortable as possible during treatment.
What are the pros of Deep TMS?
Some folks don’t respond to the first line of treatments that are offered for most mental health disorders: therapy and medication. Our brains are all different, so it makes sense that one treatment style would not fit everyone. When folks have disorders like depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder that is resistant to treatment, Deep TMS can help. Also, since Deep TMS is an FDA approved treatment, most insurance plans cover the treatment for resistant depression or Major Depressive Disorder, which makes it more accessible to folks who can benefit from it. Since people see results fairly quickly with Deep TMS, it can be a more convenient and cost-effective option than other longer-term treatments. And the statistics are pretty impressive too – research shows that 75% of patients treated with Brainsway’s deep TMS saw significant improvement or remission in symptoms of depression. Since this procedure is non-invasive, it’s more convenient. You don’t have to worry about undergoing a major procedure or visiting a hospital, and you can complete treatment in an office setting.
