Scar Revision Surgery
Scars are a natural result of the body’s response to an injury. Unfortunately, scar-less surgery is not yet a reality. Scar revision surgery aims to minimize old scars so that they are less visible and blend in better with the surrounding skin.
Scars tend to be most noticeable when they are raised, colored, if they are sunken in or in a conspicuous location such as the face or arms. Other scars can become unsightly and enlarged, known as hypertrophic scars or keloid. Even wounds that have healed well can affect your appearance if they distort the surrounding tissue.
Treatment options vary based on the type of scar, its severity and its location. Some scars may just require topical treatment, while others may require steroid injections or other medications. Surgical revision may be the only solution sometimes. This may entail advanced techniques and wound closure to make the scar less noticeable. This can be performed in the office under local anesthesia or under general anesthesia if desired. Other approaches include laser treatment or dermabrasion to stimulate the healing cascade and promote scar remodeling.
