Re-elect Dr. Edel Alonso
Dr. Edel Alonso was elected in 2016 to the Santa Clarita Community College District (SCCCD) Governing Board of Trustees and, as a former faculty leader at College of the Canyons (COC), brought an educator’s perspective to the board. She was a COC professor and academic counselor for 16 years before she retired and won the election for the Board of Trustees Area 2 seat. Not surprisingly, she earned an Excellence in Trusteeship Certificate, a two-year program from the Community College League of California, in her very first year.
Now running for a second term in the Nov 3 general elections, Dr. Alonso has been endorsed by all three employee groups at the college: full-time faculty, part-time faculty, and classified employees. In addition, fellow trustee Joan MacGregor and the Faculty Association of California Community Colleges have endorsed Edel. COC Class of 2020 graduate Basil Aranda states, “Throughout my tenure as Student Trustee (2019-20), Dr. Alonso has consistently been the trustee to ask the hard questions and demand the right answers. To work side-by-side with her is to witness her conviction, skills, and tenacity. As a student, I am so grateful there was someone like Dr. Alonso advocating for us and our education. As an alumnus, I could not imagine the board without her. I endorse Dr. Alonso for trustee of the SCCCD.”
Firmly committed to the best interest of the students, teachers, and our community, her priorities are:
* Campus safety
* Student access, equity, and success
* Fiscal responsibility to the taxpayers
Transparency & accountability.
COC instructor Koren Young states, “As an instructor at COC and someone who has seen Dr. Alonso’s dedication to students and faculty, I enthusiastically endorse her to serve again on the COC Board of Trustees.” Former Nursing instructor Lori Brown states, “One of the most exquisitely prepared, inspiring, and effective leaders I have ever known!”
